The Cathedral of Monreale (1174-82), on the heights of Palermo is a striking piece of architecture, the plan is part basilican and part byzantine and the interior obtains a certain grandness from a combination of a severe design and a rich and eclectic iconography and use of materials,which contrasts beautifully with the austerity of the facades.
In my eyes one of the most under appreciated ecclesiastical buildings in Italy.
